Titik Tentram Cafe : a cafe with eco-friendly roof materials

Global climate extremes occur more frequently worldwide, leading to several natural phenomena, such as the air temperature anomaly in Indonesia. According to the data from BMKG, in early July 2023, Indonesia experienced the fourth-highest air temperature anomaly since 1981. This phenomenon causes high temperatures across multiple regions in Indonesia. The extreme release of carbon emissions from daily activities such as transportation and industrial activities leads to this phenomenon. According to “Energy Saving Guides in Governs Buildings” by Berchmans, the construction sector in Indonesia is responsible for contributing 50% of the total energy consumption and 30% of greenhouse gas emissions.

Looking at these facts, the government has taken a proactive step by establishing building standardization based on the guides for sustainable building (Green Building Council Indonesia, 2012) that pays high attention to the environment, society, and good management in the design process. An effective strategy to achieve the green building concept goals is selecting eco-friendly materials.

A public building that uses eco-friendly materials to create green buildings is a cafe called Titik Tentram, situated on Nglegosari Street in Bantul, Yogyakarta.

The cafe, nestled on a wide site with a pleasing landscape, uses the eco-friendly steel roof material, COLORBOND Matt. Its ability to minimize heat absorption can reduce the temperature rising inside the building throughout the day and maximize energy saving. Moreover, steel roofs, renowned for their resilience against diverse weather conditions and other external factors, can minimize material treatment and replacement needs, ensuring long-term energy efficiency.

The decision to use this particular steel material was guided by the cafe’s function as a public space, where the exterior of the building plays a big part in encouraging visitors. Despite using steel for the roofing, considerable attention was dedicated to preserving the building’s visual appeal. The elegant white gable roof, aligned beautifully with the walls, creates a simple and sweet yet elegant. The beautiful white hue, which contrasts with the green landscape, makes this building a striking focal point but also harmonizes with the natural palette of the surrounding environment. Creating a cozy place to enjoy coffee and having conversations with loved ones while surrounded by pleasant greenery.
