Sumu Fumu Terrace: A Freedom of Communication Space Reflected by Nendo

Syifa Aisha Arashi | Friday, 1 July 2022

Nendo designed a communication room for the company Sekisui House Ltd. in Minato, Japan. The area offers a lounge space intended as a residential consulting room. Because it is designed similar to a coffee shop, in this room visitors or clients can discuss while drinking coffee in the lounge.

The lounge is also equipped with a design studio to help visitors feel more directed and connected to the architects. The open room deliberately became Nendo's concentration in minimizing the discomfort of the visitors. Therefore, this room is dominated by glass doors, large windows, and greenery as part of the design.

Green nature, sunlight, natural air, and wood are essential elements in building design. SUMU FUMU TERRACE is designed to open using large glass so that natural light can freely enter the space and display greenery from the outside. Some of the selected types of plants are focused on bringing the natural scenery into the space in an elegant way to create a cool atmosphere on each side. The park is designed not only as greenery or as a complement to the building but also serves as a partition between indoors and outdoor.

The glass panels and 200 aluminum frames that frame each room are arranged in a spiral with plants in between, to create a division of space with natural beauty throughout the space. Rails mounted on glass doors are intended to allow the flexible installation of racks, hangers, hooks, and monitors.

Wood material on the ceiling and floor applied from two slightly different colors has a role to harmonize the atmosphere of nature applied to the building. In addition, wood is also applied to furniture with a combination of hollow iron which is a visual complement to the design of SUMU FUMU TERRACE.

Overall the design of SUMU FUMU TERRACE can be characterized by the freedom and diversity created by the partitions of greenery with glass doors that do not limit the activities of each user of the space. In general, the process of designing a house requires real data with good communication and can exchange ideas directly between clients and architects to minimize errors in the required data.

"With the changing needs of prospective home buyers caused by the increasing amount of information available online, conventional housing services with showhouses or space mockups have been replaced by more long-term, intangible ones such as consultations on lifestyle, maintenance, and adaptation. To change the family structure," Nendo said.

Such trends are changing service styles with samples and material models that can only be viewed online. Therefore, the design team created SUMU FUMU TERRACE as a communication space for architects and clients by meeting all needs.
