Reconstructing the Past in Hrr Cafe, Minimalist-Clean Module with Strong Attractiveness

Aryo Sumbogo | Monday, 4 July 2022

As a project that seeks to reconstruct the past, especially regarding the important role of the Han River, Hrr Cafe is here to be a module of the 'ferry dock’ (as well as its ferry too) with a modern twist.

The location of Hrr Cafe was once a ferry dock area that was busy with a lot of work. However, by Bricol Lab, the design of Hrr Cafe was not necessarily made to reflect that busyness. On the other hand, with the concept of 'A Dock Where You Can Come and Go', Hrr Cafe is actually designed to be more powerful than the historical traces of its site. But, at the same time, the design of Hrr Cafe is still desired to have a strong appeal in the midst of its environment that is not as busy as it used to be.

Thus, Hrr Cafe tries to associate time in a simple way when it also blurs its boundaries. The boundary between before and after the construction of man-made embankments shifted the role of the dock and caused the land and water to seem to be no longer far apart. All of that can be seen in how Hrr Cafe has shaped its space, which is minimalist and clean. By using white color and some wood accents, this 49.5 square meter space also stands out compared to the surroundings. Indirectly, the appearance also implies the form of a ferry that was leaning heavily on the dock at that time.

In addition, the glass doors and windows that fill the face of the building from floor to ceiling also strengthen the position of Hrr Cafe as an attractive space. Because sunlight can enter directly and create the perception of a space full of water. That way, everyone who is enjoying coffee inside can still interact with pedestrians. In other words, Hrr Cafe means that it has also blurred the boundary between the inside and outside, becoming a symbol of space that can attract the attention of those nearby. Just as a space that acts as a refuge and seeks to create relationships of various kinds of life.

Keep in mind, Hrr Cafe is the reincarnation of the Han River dock which is now a memory. As a refuge, it is also harmoniously managed to connect the two ages. Like the meaning of its name, which comes from the onomatopoeic word '흐르르', the wave of aspirations of many people who will reach the space they want through the medium of the river.
