Madani Matadian | Monday, 25 April 2022

Recently, the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) has uploaded a video to YouTube of a low-rise hospital prototype for their latest design in their “hospital for the future” project. Reinier de Graaf and Buro Happold were entrusted with designing the project aimed at the Al Daayan Health District in Doha, Qatar. This collaborative project explores the potential of modularity, prefabrication, and automation in relation to the rapid changes in medical science.

This 2.33 minutes video shows the grand design of a “hospital for the future” full of technological sophistication in the development process to the service facilities that will be in the hospital later. The hospital is planned to occupy an area of 1.3 million square meters with a cross-shaped modular unit (+). These units are locally built at low cost with minimal reliance on global supply chains. So it can be reconfigured and extended without interrupting or affecting ongoing processes.

OMA / Reinier de Graaf designed the Al Daayan Health District by leveraging local high-tech farms that will supply food and medicinal plants for the production of medicines and solar farms that will enable the district to function independently. In addition, in the middle of the master plan there's a two-story structure that accommodates three areas; a teaching hospital, a women's and children's hospital, and an outpatient diagnostic center.

Different facilities are allocated in different places, clinical facilities are arranged on the first floor while the bed wards are placed on the ground floor to reduce the use of lifts by patients. It aims to facilitate circulation and provide visual access leading to the garden (an important architectural feature in Islamic medical architecture) for the patients.

Currently, hospitals are a very important need considering the world is experiencing a pandemic. The development of health facilities is accompanied by human awareness of the importance of maintaining health. So, according to Reiner de Graaf, architects have an important role in designing and building hospitals that can adapt to world medical developments.

“Architects have long aimed to provide hospitals with a final solution. This proposal starts from the opposite end: seeing the hospital as a type of building that is forever built, as an organism whose space and time must be considered equally,” Reinier de Graaf

ZHA Designs Jinghe New City and Art Center with Flexible and Representative Form ZHA Designs Jinghe New City and Art Center with Flexible and Representative Form

Zaha Hadid Architect has designed and released a visual edition of the Jinghe New City Culture and Art Center building that spans the Xi’an, China, 8-lane highway and has a representative shape. The shape of the building is inspired by the flow of the Jinghe River. Jinghe New City Culture and Art Center has a meandering form, there are courtyards and outdoor areas that serve as cultural and recreational activities. Zaha Hadid Architect got a reference on the shape of the Jinghe New City Culture and Art Center which was inspired by the Jinghe river and mountain valleys that have existed for a long time. The mass forms, layers, and flowing surfaces of buildings define the cultural sequence and interior and exterior recreation of the community. Jinghe New City Culture and Art Center is equipped with interconnected courtyards and landscapes so that visitors’ activities can be fully accommodated. Performance area with blue ambient light. In choosing a location, ZHA needs to consider several things that are strategic or not. Jinghe City was chosen because the new city is a growth center for industrial energy, materials, artificial intelligence, and aerospace. The adjacent eight-lane development on Jinghe Avenue can connect the city’s commercial and residential areas in the north with parks in the south. It will include a flexible multimedia library and performing arts theater, multi-function hall, studio, and exhibition gallery.  Flowing and winding mass of buildings. The multimedia library will be combined with a traditional print publication room and visual reality technology that serves to expand learning boundaries and enrich knowledge exchange. In the building, there is also a series of terraces overlooking the skylights which are equipped with a place for reading, private and shared research. Meanwhile, performing arts theater can be used to accommodate various events with a capacity of 450 people. Stretches over the main road with 8 lane segment. ZHA also plans energy savings through optimizing ventilation and natural light and prioritizing local materials. This public space also has solar panels that can generate electricity, as well as media that can collect rainwater so that it can be reused.  So Jinghe New City Culture and Art Center becomes a flexible place for recreation and sharing knowledge about culture. A representative form is one of the references regarding the function of space and the suitability of a sustainable public area.

The Story of a Doghouse Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright The Story of a Doghouse Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright

In the 1950s, Robert and Gloria Berger's family owned an adjoining Usonian house with their doghouse. Interestingly, the doghouse was also designed by the famous architect from the United States, Frank Lloyd Wright. As Wright's smallest design ever built, the doghouse has its own heartwarming story. So, it's no surprise that a copy is currently on display at the Marin Civic Center, San Rafael, California because many people want to see Wright's masterpiece. The original version of Eddie's House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (Image Courtesy of County of Marin). Although the size is not much, the doghouse, nicknamed Eddie's House, is still not arbitrarily designed by Wright. Like other Wright-designed homes, this doghouse showcases the characteristics of the Organic Architecture mogul. One of them is the low-pitched roof with large overhangs that can be found in many of Wright's home designs. All of this was done by Wright because the design of the dog house was initiated by the request of Jim Berger, his client's son who was then 12 years old. Berger himself asked Wright to design a suitable house for his dog. Wright also put the design concept of the doghouse into a blueprint and ordered Berger to build it with some pointers. From the instructions for building it on a concrete slab to the use of redwood planks for the walls However, the doghouse project had to be delayed until 1963, after Berger had taken a military tour. After that, Eddie's House was managed to wake up, but not long after it jacked up and ended up in a garbage dump. The reason is that in 1970 his father died. Eddie's House copy on display at the Marin Civic Center, San Rafael, California (Image Courtesy of County of Marin). Finally, in 2010, Berger and his brother rebuilt the doghouse while still following the original plan. When finished, Berger then donated a copy of Eddie's House to the County of Marin in Northern California in 2016. The intention is that the story of the Wright-designed dog house can also be enjoyed by others. Since then, many people have been interested to see it. The initial plan for the display was only two months but was eventually extended to one year. After that, the County of Marin Civic Center chose to keep and close the exhibit, despite public enthusiasm for the doghouse. Until “We received calls and emails since 2016 from people who wanted to come see it,” said Libby Garrison, Head of Marketing and Communications for the County of Marin Department of Cultural Services. So, after a few years, Eddie's House is now back on display at the County of Marin Civic Center. Unknowingly, the moment also implies a meeting between Wright's grandest and smallest works throughout his career as an architect.   Reference: The Smallest Structure Frank Lloyd Wright Ever Designed Is Now on View

Graz History Museum | INNOCAD Graz History Museum | INNOCAD

Located in the Palais Herberstein, this museum is one of the most significant historical buildings in the city center. One of the exhibitions held at this museum is a temporary exhibition entitled “How was that? Space and History”. This exhibition is part of a four-part provincial exhibition in the Austrian state of Styria. In this exhibition, the cultural heritage of the Styria region is on display on the first floor of the Graz History Museum. Covering an area of 500m2, the exhibition includes a screen showing the changes from the modern era to the 20th century. From this entire exhibition, visitors can see ancient traces of historic architecture, landscapes, borders, laws, and people's behavior in each era. A transition between eras that invites visitors to experience a journey through space and time with immersive visual and sound displays, morphing boundary animations accompanied by linguistic and dialectal changes. To invite visitors to participate and experience history in an unexpected way, the exhibition is divided into four spaces that provide diverse and unpretentious sensory experiences. These four diverse sensory experiences were introduced into the space: shell, structure, floor, and sound. The deeper visitors enter the 10-room loop, the more dense and complex the visual experience gets. The first step is the transformation of the neutral shell into an artistically translated landscape that is untouched by human hands. To show the metaphors, there is an infinite landscape circle that wraps around the wall, art by Eva Stern. This work depicts the original human nature which is sequentially modified, reshaped, and altered. From the cut, a spatial wooden structure emerges, referring to the material and construction dimensions of the shell wood frame. These elements demonstrate the adequacy of human action being challenged and reflected back through the lens of pencil graffiti. Along the way, visitors will step across the floor projected with town and city structures and typology. Large mockups and displays such as Roman tombstones, gallows, and military tents lined up on the outskirts of the circulation area as flotsam and witnesses of the past. To complete the entire exhibition, sound installations were created and produced by 13&9 Design in collaboration with Severon Su. This is a key element of scenography that contributes to the visitor's multi-dimensional experience. The audio composition of this exhibition consists of an abstract layer and a narrative layer. The abstract layer emphasizes the spatial and conceptual design themes, while the narrative layer accompanies the space with sound effects that reflect the mood of each period. The last room in the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the past. This reflection then relates the impact that the past has on the present and future of humans. This room is entered through a narrow and long transitional space, closing the visitor's experience in the exhibition with the question: “What is to come and what is left?”.
