Creating a living space design that can accommodate various human activities on a narrow land that is only 9 meters square is a challenge for designers. Hence, Juan Ruiz and Amelia Tapia developed and patented a smart innovation. The project is called IWI, and the IWI habitable module is on the rooftop of a multi-story building with a dense design with high flexibility for learning activities or as a workplace.

The material used in the design of this living space is a transformation of the simplified house shape with a triangular roof shape. Made of wood material that is cut with the production of digital numerical control (CNC milling), it has the advantage of being mass-produced. This design has an advantage: it can be assembled and disassembled easily by the user. Depending on the user's needs, the space can be compressed or expanded, so it is very flexible.

When the IWI is compressed, it will look like a storage rack for the occupants' belongings, but it can accommodate many activities when expanded. This living space has diverse functions such as a workspace, yoga studio, relaxation room, workshop, meeting room, living room, etc. In addition, when entering the IWI through a glass door with two door leaves, residents can enjoy nature, namely the view of the slopes of the Pichincha volcano.

The IWI habitable module consists of two modules connected by a folding structure, such as an accordion covered with a white textile. The module on the front is the entrance to space and the construction of wheels that can be pulled to expand the space plane. At the same time, the back module consists of furniture designed very densely with everything needed for space use, namely: chairs, tables, drawers, shelves, etc. As an additional facility, this living space is also equipped with a sink, lighting, and an electric switch.

Due to the flexible spatial arrangement, IWI can be used for individual activities by placing tables and chairs on one side facing the door. Then, if 2-4 people are needed, the table can be widened, and chairs added. The group's activities include discussions, meetings, or just chatting and enjoying a cup of coffee.

The architect's design takes into account residents' activities from morning to evening. The goal is to provide complete facilities even in a narrow space. The shape of the furniture is slim and can be stored on other tables for space-saving so that the habitable module IWI can be an alternative living space with a flexible and compact system.
