When the Sea Whispers From A Voz do Mar

Aryo Sumbogo | Thursday, 22 September 2022

A Voz do Mar, meaning 'the sound of the sea,' is an architectural intervention against the Cape Sagres in Algarve, Portugal. At first, A Voz do Mar plans as a temporary intervention in the Algarve Contemporary Art Program in 2010. However, in 2015, Pedro Garcia of Ressano Garcia Arquitectos was responsible for developing the project into a permanent intervention.

Shaped like a circular labyrinth, A Voz do Mar is depicted as the end point of the world, standing at the end of the Mediterranean land. Visually, A Voz do Mar represents a chamber of sound that offers the experience of solemnly hearing the sound of the waves. From this concept, the sound from the sea is analogous to a whisper from the earth. In other words, A Voz do Mar also forms a metaphor for a 'voice' that the sea cannot have.

A Voz do Mar consists of five concrete rings surrounding a ground fault on the cape of the Sagres. The walls are arranged at a gradual height to form a pursed silhouette. Its central ring acts as a space that resonates with the sound of the sea to make it sound more rhythmic.

Such a centralized plan encourages the perception that the center space is essential. However, the design also allows visitors to discover unlimited views through the sea entrance.

Through acoustic projects like this, A Voz do Mar, eventually, people will be more aware of the rhythmic presence of the sea. Although it is far below, the call from the sea will still reach the ears of everyone who enters this chamber of sound.
