The Traditional-Modern Fusion Awakens Vietnamese Lacquerware Crafts

Binh Duong Province, located north of Ho Chi Minh City, is the starting point for developing the high-end lacquer industry in Vietnam. This background has guided HinzStudio in designing the TUBON, a gallery of quality lacquerware located in Binh Duong.

The TUBON was designed by HinzStudio while maintaining its distinctive roof shapeThe TUBON was designed by HinzStudio while maintaining its distinctive roof shape.

Due to the condition of the site having been abandoned for years, this gallery eventually received 'attention' from some who suggested renovating it into a more functional building.

In this project, HinzStudio was entrusted with renovating an old building with an ancient tiled roof covered in moss for decades. The roof is a traditional element in the TUBON design, which comes with a new (modern) 'face.' The distinctive shape of the roof was retained, but to strengthen the structure, the team modified the structure with a more modern system of sleek and sturdy steel bars. As a result, a mix of traditional and modern designs became the main dish of this project.

Meanwhile, the program space within the TUBON is organized into three parts: a lobby and two separate exhibition spaces. Besides acting as an area for receiving visitors, the lobby also has a role in connecting the two exhibition spaces. For example, visitors can switch through gently curved slits on either side of the lobby from one room to another under the same roof.

However, after going deeper into each exhibition space, visitors can feel a different experience. The exhibition spaces at the TUBON designed with rows of skylights add to the dramatic impression of the interior. The lacquerware in the exhibition hall will look like living things surrounded by a cold dark gray concrete brick wall.

The revival of values from traditional Vietnamese crafts in a modern context is the concept that HinzStudio wants to convey. Through the TUBON, traditional crafts can still be enjoyed modernly.
