The HIÊN House: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition, Nature, and Modern Living

The HIÊN House

For the family behind the HIÊN House, woodworking is more than just a profession – it's a way of life that spans generations. Drawing inspiration from this ancestral craft, the architects chose wood as the primary material for the project. This decision embraces the comfort and nostalgia associated with wood and exemplifies a commitment to cost-effective construction. The family's active participation in the woodworking process further reinforces the connection between the home and their cherished tradition.

The HIÊN House

The design philosophy behind the HIÊN House is deeply rooted in the desire to maintain continuity between the family's rural upbringing and their transition to urban living. Recognizing the significance of their rural heritage, the design team incorporated key "rural architecture" elements into the house's structure. The "Hiên" – meaning veranda in Vietnamese – serves as a bridge between interior and exterior spaces, paying homage to tradition while adapting to the tropical climate of Central Vietnam. By replicating the layout of their countryside home, the design team emphasizes the importance of habituation and familiarity in creating a harmonious living environment.

The HIÊN House: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition, Nature, and Modern Living

The relationship between humans and nature is the main harmony in the HIÊN House's design. The seamless integration of green spaces within the living areas blurs the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, offering an immersive experience that fosters a sense of tranquility. These lush pockets connect residents to the natural world and promote a healthy living environment by strategically planting fragrant herbs that deter pests while attracting beneficial organisms. A thriving vegetable garden further contributes to the family's sustainable lifestyle, offering a fresh and organic source of nourishment.

The HIÊN House

Sustainability is woven into the very fabric of the HIÊN House. Rescued wood from old constructions takes on new life as it forms the home's roof structure, stairs, and interior furniture. The decision to forgo chemical coatings allows the wood's natural character to shine through, creating a unique and authentic aesthetic. Local materials and labor ensure economic efficiency and minimize the project's environmental footprint, resulting in a construction that stands as a beacon of responsible design.

The HIÊN House

Beyond its physical structure, the HIÊN House embodies a profound love for the family's traditional craft and is a powerful symbol of familial ties. By seamlessly blending modern comforts with time-honored elements, the design team has created a space where generations can come together to celebrate their shared heritage. In the ever-evolving urban context, the HIÊN House is a testament to the enduring importance of cultural preservation and offers a profound connection to the roots that ground us.
