The Arc at Green School | IBUKU

Annisa Fitria | Thursday, 26 August 2021

In Badung, Bali on a site area of 760 square meters, IBUKU introduced a bundle of bamboo that soared overhead in a parabolic arc across while the gridshells surface plane stitched the arches together. It creates the illusion where the roof appears to be encased between the arches weighing it, but the curved surface brings strength to the shape.

Schools that are children's learning places, in the development of different school buildings, if conventional schools are just buildings with classes and teachers come, IBUKU introduced school that blends with nature, in The Arc at Green School project, Bali offers unprecedented structural design solutions, the extraordinary thing of bamboo architecture.

The famous Green School in Bali, Indonesia, previously had a 12-year history of freeing students' limitations in learning, getting closer to nature as a form of expanding horizons. The Arc at Green school is built from 14-meter-high bamboo arches spanning 19 Meters, interconnected by the bamboos that gain their strength from arching in two opposite directions. It takes months of research and development and fine-tuning of details to be custom made, resulting in a smooth design with a beauty comparable to the research and development that had to be done beforehand. Use one of nature's greatest strategies to create large spaces with minimal structures. Anticlastic gridshells hold the arches that work in compression in place that strain. These structure fields seem to be encased in the space between thin arches that soar overhead, giving a sense of intimacy and beauty into space.
