Located along the Punan Canal, Fengxian City District, the Shanghai Cofco Health and Culture Center began to be designed in 2016 as a public building. The main purpose of this building is to become a social condenser that can foster a community of residents from the new housing block in the vicinity with public spaces and parks along the existing canal. In contrast to the repetitive housing blocks, the architectural style of this cultural and health center emphasizes spatial energy and openness.

With a total area of 7520m2, the complex is divided into a cultural center and a health center. The cultural center is larger in size and spans five floors with a total floor area of 6030m2. It includes a cafe, game room and other cultural recreation programs. In contrast, the Health Center is smaller with a total floor area of 1490 m2 and consists of three levels above the ground. Inside, it provides various health services for the surrounding community.

As a central public space building, the Center for Health and Culture uses exoskeletal concrete construction. Subtractive cuts in concrete structures bring space that forms the language of architecture. Steven Holl Architects also applies post-pandemic architectural strategies in its designs. According to them, working on architecture for culture and health is a social commitment that is urgently needed at this time, especially when the global impact of the pandemic continues to be felt.

In addition to promoting healthy living and cultural exchange, the design team has also incorporated a number of sustainability measures. These include increased greenery and open space, use of 30% recycled materials, centralized heating and cooling systems, CO2 monitoring, thermal storage and gray/rainwater retention and recycling.

Some of the post-pandemic architectural strategies applied to this building are fairly simple, namely by maximizing fresh air and natural light, as well as displaying open circulation and social spaces. The concept of “clouds and time” underscores the scheme, which is then reflected on the landscape design. The landscape is organized in large clock-like circles while the two public buildings are cloud-like in their porosity and openness. The building is shaped by the curve of the central landscape space, which develops a strong connection between the parts like a cloud. Both buildings have green sedum roofs, which blend even more with the landscape when viewed from the surrounding apartment buildings.
