Churchill College appointed Cottrel and Vermeulen to design a place that could accommodate new graduate students. The new building was built with 3 separate volumes that can accommodate 40 students, consisting of 30 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, 6 communal rooms, 5 self-contained flats, and support rooms. The building is adjacent to a pepper pot house completed by CVA in 2002 and is located between Storey’s Way and the main campus of Churchill College, in Cambridge.

Because the building is used to accommodate students, creating a place to live far from requires an arrangement through rapid community organization and hierarchies in the form of residences and parks. The landscape and architectural character that is designed is a response to the immediate and historical environmental context of the location and contributes to completing the goals of the college for the postgraduate community.

the dominant use of wood materials

In designing the new building, Cottrel and Vermeulen took an architectural approach that reflected the characteristics of the surrounding building form and applied a modern style. Most of the materials used are natural materials with a clear texture. The exterior appearance of the building is covered with red clay tiles made by hand, this tile was chosen because it represents irregularity while creating color variations resulting in a non-uniform texture. There are also tiles with round shapes that are applied as decorations, this becomes an interesting thing on the facade of the building.

Maple wood and birch plywood are used as flooring in the bedroom. Wood materials are used to create a room that feels bright and warm. The use of terrazzo windows is a much-loved feature of the college as well as the large communal space at the center of the cluster where students can socialize, cook, and study together. The large window seats in the student rooms will make students feel connected to the rest of the campus. Copper and concrete roofs are the materials used in building roofs.
